"Shippers Raise World Trade Concerns Over U.S. Law For 100% Scanning of Containers"

Members of the Global Shippers Forum (GSF) today voiced grave concerns regarding the cargo scanning mandates set forth in a new U.S. security law that was signed late last week by President George W. Bush. Known as, “Implementing Recommendations of the 9/11 Commission Act of 2007” the law mandates new security requirements on all aspects of freight transport including the “scanning” of all air cargo carried aboard commercial aircraft within three years, and all maritime containers destined for the U.S. at foreign ports after five years.

The 29th Annual General Meeting of the Federation of ASEAN Shippers’ Councils (FASC) and the 3rd Annual Meeting of the Asian Shippers’ Council (ASC) were held in Jakarta from 19 – 21 November 2006, hosted by the Indonesian National Shippers’ Council The meetings were attended by 40 delegates from 12 shippers’ councils.
