The ASC covers 5 geographical regions: i.e. China Area, South Asia, North Asia, Oceania and South East Asia. It consists of 20 shippers’ councils from 16 countries in the Asian region, being those from China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Korea, Australia, Fiji, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and affiliate shippers’ councils in Africa. The ASC is led by a Chairman and supported by a Permanent Secretariat in Colombo, Sri Lanka since 2009 September after it was transferred from Singapore.
Convenors from each of these five regions is represented on a propotionate basis in the council working as the execuitve committee. They deliberate on matters involving shipping and transportation, undertake to formulate policies and work programmes necessary to achieve the objectives of the council, which are to recognise and unify Asian shippers’ interests in the expansion of trade and economic growth in Asia.
